The Olympus–Current Biology photomicrography competition

چکیده

No, it’s not a painting by Jackson Pollock but the winning entry in the Olympus–Current Biology photomicrography competition. This image of neurons from the rat cerebral cortex was produced by Ger Ramakers, at the Netherlands Institute for Brain Research, Amsterdam, using cultured 23-day fetal rat cerebral cortex. The image shows GABA-containing neurons (green) and an aspartate-containing neuron (red), dotted with synaptophysin-containing presynaptic terminals (blue). The neurons were fixed after two days in culture and stained using conventional indirect immunofluorescent methods. The image was taken using a Zeiss plan-apochromat 63× objective. Dr Ramakers will receive an Olympus Camedia C1400L digital camera. The runners up in the competition will appear in this column in forthcoming issues. Biology in pictures

The Olympus–Current Biology photomicrography competition This spectacular image of mitosis in a newt lung cell is the winning entry in the Olympus–Current Biology photomicrography competition. — using epithelial lung cells of the Northwestern rough skinned newt (Taricha granulosa). This cell is in late anaphase or early telophase of mitosis. Three fluorescent probes have been used to reveal dif...

Mitosis in focus

This image of a cell in early mitosis is the winner of the second prize in the recent Olympus–Current Biology photomicrography competition. It was produced by Alexey Khodjakov at the Wadsworth Center, Albany, New York using lung epithelial cells. This cell was fixed at the earliest stage of mitotic spindle formation, just as the nuclear envelope is dissolving and the clustered chromosomes (stai...

Small world on the big screen

Movie-goers have always looked to France for slick, beautifully photographed drama, but in general the stars are human. The movie Microcosmos, from which the images above are taken, has a cast almost entirely made up of insects. Entomologists Claude Nuridsany and Marie Perennou made the movie in an attempt to bring their research to a wider audience. They've achieved that beyond the wildest dre...

Retina in focus

is the winner of the second prize in the recent Olympus–Current Biology photomicrography competition. The retina has been flat-mounted and stained by indirect immunofluorescence to reveal astrocytes (green) and blood vessels (orange/yellow) that are tightly associated with each other, forming a fine network over the retinal surface. Astrocytes (a type of glial cell) are critical for the develop...

Interior design

The mitochondrion is the 'power house' of the cell. The internal structure of the mitochondrion — in particular, the shape of the infoldings of the inner membrane (cristae) — has long been debated. Now, three-dimensional tomographic reconstructions like the ones above are resolving the controversy. At top left, a slice through a rat liver mitochondrion is reconstructed, showing 44 cristae (yell...
